Making Memories in God’s Country

Making Memories in God’s Country

Every year I try hard to get close friends and family together to enjoy the outdoors. This often takes many forms from the simple fishing trip, a walk in the woods mushroomin', a short hunt or, like this past Memorial Day weekend, a healthy dose of camping. No, not just any type of camping where you pick some random park and hang out. We're talking God's Country, Northeast Iowa where limestone bluffs, clean, small streams and classic Iowa towns give you plenty to do like canoing, fishing, birdwatching and a kids versus...

Book Review: Pro PHP

June 10, 2008

On my flight to the DC PHP Conference in Washington D.C. I had a chance to read a copy of Pro PHP: Patterns, Frameworks, Testing and More written by Kevin McArthur. I've never written a book, I clearly don't have a first hand appreciation for the amount of work that undoubtedly goes on under the hood. Given that I will try to be as constructive with this review as possible.

PHP SOAP Toolkit

June 3, 2008

Michael Tutty, a friend and co-worker, gave the below talk at the DC PHP Conference . PHP SOAP Toolkit is a handy way to fill-in some of the "missing" pieces of SOAP support in PHP that make implementing both SOAP services and clients in a way that is inter-operable with other languages like .NET and Java. If you are interested in getting your feet wet with PHP and SOAP particularly with contract-first type of development you can take your WSDL on over here where you can quickly turn it into a downloadable PHP SOAP...

DCPHP Slides

June 2, 2008

Thanks for all who showed up to my talk at the DC PHP Conference on "Fed Up of Framework Hype?". The slides are below and I'm sure some will ask about MVCnPHP which can be downloaded here. I know MVCnPHP isn't quite documented as much as I'd like...please ask questions OR wait as I will likely have a blog post about how to get started with it.

The Secret to A Decade of Love

The Secret to A Decade of Love

So yesterday I talked a bit about how my love affair with Kate started. Today I'm going to give you all a secret as to why it still works. What is it? We argue well. Sound odd? Maybe but the truth is when the ball is rolling and life is good everything is just a bit sweeter. The true test of any marriage is how you endure those hard times and, trust me, we've had our fair share of those. I'll admit, most of it is me...

Cutting Use of Zend_Log in Half

May 30, 2008

As part of the framework we use at work, we borrow what we feel are the best components out there and logging is a key part of that. Logging should be simple to setup, easy to use and should minimize work on the developer. After all, you are going to do a lot of logging, right? We use Zend_Log exclusively and while I like it when coupled with Zend_Registry you've always got the following two lines of code:

// at the beginning of our application (in a singleton or in

A Decade of Love

A Decade of Love

It was November in 1991 when Kate and I started dating. Being a bit modest I'm not at liberty to talk about the full circumstances surrounding how we started this romance bit I can say it was innocent, high school love. Neither of us had any real responsibilities, no career, and no commitments...it was the life (or so I thought). No, it wasn't love at first sight....sure that'd make for a better story but the truth was I remember one of the first things I said to Kate when we talked about making...

Review: Maverick Grill

May 29, 2008

Updated 5/29/2008: Got an anonymous troll that commented to this upset because I was so hard on the new restaurant in town. Only other thing they could come up with were some misspellings in the review itself (thanks, now fixed). The coward then suggested I go back in the fall. Actually, I was there just last week. Service was a touch better (no kids though) and the food was iffy at best. Two couples (friends) were there a week or so ago and left with the same impression. That said, I will take...

Government in the Web 2.0 World

May 28, 2008

In a rare moment when Twitter was up Ivo Jansch put me on to one of his recaps of php|tek and I was particularly interested in a presentation by Terry Chay. If you haven't heard Terry talk there are two things you will leave with:

  1. Your quota for the f-bomb. I know it may sound unprofessional but he does manage to use it to draw attention to the things that really deserve it. Truth told, though, he does simply enjoy cussing.
  2. A bunch of web programming goodness particularly around web development and PHP
In Ivo's...

Slides from Talk on Cross Site Request Forgery (CSRF)

May 27, 2008

Some have asked for the slides on the talk I gave at work about Cross Site Request Forgeries (CSRF). The topic is far from new but where I work keeping everybody on the same page, especially a healthy dose of contractors coming and going all the time. The talk had a lot of narrative and code samples that aren't covered in the slides so if you want some background on what I did/said during a particular slide just post comments to the specific page on the slideshare site.

Kubuntu Updates Are a Touch Annoying

May 27, 2008

Yes, I know you get what you pay for and for my desktop pleasure Kubuntu has been a damn good Linux desktop. Any Linux distro is rough around the edges in various spots but Kubuntu has a lot less of these rough edges than most distros I've driven. That said, one area for improvement is with updates. An out-of-the box installation of Kubunto will point you to various mirrors to get your updates from (e.g. us.archive.ubuntu.com). Problem is adept-updater, the handy little desktop widget that notifies you of available upgrades. Last week...

Fantasy Fishing = Real Cash

May 14, 2008

Move over Tom Brady and A-Rod! Fantasy Sports has a new kid in town and it brings names like Kevin VanDam, Skeet Reese and Gary Klein. That's right we are talking Fantasy Fishing. And this isn't your run of the mill fantasy sport. We are talking real money, with purses over $400,000 for each of the seven FLW tournaments and a chance to win $5,000,000 if you can pick the top seven contestants - in order - for any of the tournaments.
