The Battle for Independents: Obama and McCain
I’ve been emailing back and forth with a number of politically-minded friends and most spend their time telling me why Obama won’t win the Democratic nomination. That’s very possible given Hillary has essentially been campaigning for the job as far back as her husband’s first term in office. Hillary also has some very deep pockets. What has to amaze all of us who keep an eye toward politics is how unbelievable Obama’s road has been thus far. Obama haters, particularly conservatives point to his lack of experience or, as they love to word it, “What does he stand for?”. That’s the amazing part, though. Over the past fifty years name another serious political contender who has brought as little actual experience as Obama? Say what you want about the 19-28 year olds showing up in large numbers…I feel it’s all come down to independents like me who don’t like the alternatives.
Think about it, with the republicans you have to consider 4 more years on top the 8 we’ve endured of Bush. Iraq, Healthcare and the Economy have people wanting change and very few independents feel the Republicans can deliver. On the flipside you have Hillary who, in m opinion, feels almost as much of an incumbent as Bush. While the Clinton era was easier to swallow than the crap Bush has put us through do we really want to go back to that? With Hillary you also have to consider that nobody on the Democratic side is more polarizing. America is thirsting for change and say what you want but no other candidate in my lifetime has conveyed the desire to change as much as Obama. On the republican side the only person I feel can really deliver any change is ironically a guy with the most experience, John McCain.
So in the only prediction I’ll make I am going to call it. Obama vs. McCain will be the decision come this November. If that happens, which is still a big IF, you’ll see a big fight over Independents. That ballot is one that excites me as about a month ago I don’t think anybody could say this could really happen.
