openSUSE 10.3 and Inte PRO/Wireless

October 16, 2007

Ok, so I finally managed to get the onboard wireless card in my HP laptop working under openSUSE 10.3. The long and short of it is that the card works fine which is quite obvious since 10.2 supported it with no real fights (i.e. no need for ndiswrapper). However, the problems seems to be that the version of KNetworkManager bundled with 10.3 is broken. Now in my searches I saw mention that downgrading or upgrading might work (assuming an upgrade is even available). For me the fix ended up being switching to wifi-radar. It’s basically a replacement for KNetworkManager. The only thing I don’t like about it is it doesn’t use kwallet to store the settings, though, it does store your wireless settings on its own. It also doesn’t run in the taskbar which is a bit upsetting being I like single click access to such a tool.

This was still a million times simpler than any Gentoo build I’ve done and minus a few hiccups it hasn’t been all bad. Now I expect I’ll be able to stay on 10.3 for quite a while. Note-to-self, though, I won’t be the first one to upgrade next time…of course I say that all the time.
