I was in Missouri for the Memorial Day weekend visiting Derrick who has a 14ft flat bottom. We went up to one of the city lakes in Moberly…I can’t remember the exact name but I believe it is the southern most of the two. Our trip was targeting crappies and we managed the first one on structure just inside the first cove. Further back in the cove the gills were on beds in the coves in 1-4 ft of water and were absolutely hammering the crickets (which I refuse to use).
We moved back out to the main lake fishing visible shore structure in anywhere from 3-12 feet. All the fish caught were done with our baits at depths of 3-8ft. I was fishing a slip bobber with a small tube jig on a 1/16oz head. Derrick was fishing the same rig with a jighead and minnow only.
In all we caught about 50 fish, we kept 35 with a half dozen of them being gills. I caught roughly 17 of the 50 and Derrick caught the rest. The difference in numbers was the fact I refused to use crickets back in the cove.
